Day 15 - A quiet animal day

 24 May 2026 - Watson Lake Yukon Territory  

Before we got busy breaking down camp and getting on the road we went back to the Sign Post Forest with a ladder and moved our sign to a higher location on one of the newer posts. It is up off the ground and out of the way. 




Back at breaking down camp I wanted to get pictures of our Drive In Movie campground. 

Our hosts were just the nicest people.  They have a "program" where registered guests can purchase diesel at the local cardlock station at a reduced price. Worked like a charm and we got diesel for $2.00 a liter. 
I really feel like this place at one time was a drive in movie theater. All it needs is a giant screen.  Spaces are super tight if they are ever completely full.

A bit after we see the motorcycles go by, we seen this guy peddling a bicycle, out in the middle of nowhere. Bear country nowhere. 



So the question of the day came up: There is a man on a bicycle in the Yukon, out in the open, is it fast food? or take out?  

We noticed more of the Services stops for fuel and food up here are still closed.  Some places don't open until 1 June. Campgrounds are full at night, yet. Come mid summer I bet it is a different story. 

We crossed the Continental Divide today. 692 miles from Dawson Creek.  We also crossed back into British Columbia for 42 miles and then back in to Yukon Territory.  That being the last dip in the highway. 

We kept seeing signs today for caribou. We finally seen one. One solo caribou. No antlers.
and we saw a black bear

Teslin Lake was beautiful. It had a lot of ice still floating on top. The mountain 



 Fuel stop in Teslin at the Trading Post. Diesel was $6.88 a gal - Still not as bad as we were thinking it was going to be by now. 

As of 12:20 today we are 13/16th of the way to Anchorage!  3120 miles!!!

Tonight we are at Johnson's Crossing. This is the bridge over the Teslin River. We crossed over and immediately afterwards we turned into the property. 



Tomorrow is Haines Junction.  I think that includes cinnamon rolls.

Day 1 - Is this really happening?

  10 May 2026 Mothers Day 10am We are off!  Not without a hiccup though. Yesterday afternoon while loading the refrigerator on board I noticed it wasn't as cool as it was earlier. After some troubleshooting we figured out the evaporator cooling fan had DIED! (Nope this isn't a part that sits on the shelf at your local Walmart.) a couple of calls were made, no one had the part in stock.  OK, not a problem. We will make do.  Plan #1 - We have a small apartment size refrigerator on the back deck area. We will use that during the trip and keep all the frozen food in the freezer side that was still working.  Plan #2 - Our good friends Mark & Peggy Steffen, who also own a Brinkley and live in St Robert, came up with the idea of swapping their refrigerator cooling fan for ours. They would call in a service order on Monday for their unit to get it repaired.  (We are both still under warranty)   They guys decide to go with plan #2.  A couple hours...

Day 5 - Dorothy this isn't Kansas and this isn't a tornado

We are under a Red Flag warning, a High wind warning (35 - 45 mph winds with gusts up to 65 mph) in effect today. WHEW!!! It is CRAZY!! We had a couple of items we needs to pick up at Walmart and we wanted to fill up the truck before heading out tomorrow morning so we went into Minot this morning while the wind wasn't to severe.  We were coming up to the Souris River in town and Rich spotted our wildlife sighting for the day, a family of Geese! 2 adult geese with 6 goslings.   We went to a local mom & pop diner for breakfast that we found online called Charlie's. The place was clean, people were nice and food was good. When we come this way again I want to go back to try there burgers.    Afterwards we drove around the block to snap a picture of the oldest Catholic Church in the area; St Leo the Great Catholic Church, built in 1908.  Next on our tour of Minot was the Scandinavian Heritage Park. Day 4 - If the wind stops blowing does everyone just fall over?

 13 May 2026  - No wind! We woke up to the most peaceful morning here in the middle of the vineyard at Viking Vines Vineyards RV park.  It was such a different feeling not being blown all over the place!  Very enjoyable.  Viking Vines Vineyard Viking Vines Vineyard RV Park Interstate 94 is a lonely Interstate. There is not much traffic up here in North Dakota.   Did you know the population of the entire state of North Dakota is around 800,000? There are cities more populated that this entire state!!  Beautiful days like today could entice a person  to move here. Then you talk to a local and hear of -45° winters and 60 mph winds for days and change your mind quicker than a prairie fire with a tail wind!!!  Interesting sights along the way today:  World's Largest Buffalo - Ummpf!!!
